SO CABLE

CABLE CONSIDERATIONS

Take a look at that SO cable.  How much do you understand about its makeup?  Perhaps you know that it acts as a conduit for temporary power, and that is the limit of your information.  The following facts are for those who really want to ensure they use the correct cable for each application.

Look around you.  Whether you are at work or at home, you are likely within view of at least two items powered by cabled electricity.  Each of these cables may be different.  In fact, it is likely that you are surrounded by virtual cable hybrids.  So many types exist today that it can be challenging to identify them.  Here’s some help.  When selecting wire or cable, keep these tips in mind:

  • Installation – Is the cable going to see primarily indoor or outdoor use?  You will need a hardy cable that’s water and perhaps oil resistant for outside, while an indoor wire may require flexibility but not weather tight properties.
  • Voltage – What do you need in order to power the item?  How much voltage is necessary?  Checking these requirements ensures you will purchase a cable the delivers at least the minimum.
  • Ampacity – Know what your application requires, and you will ensure the ampacity is sufficient.
  • Heating conditions – Think of the surrounding weather – and then consider much more.  It is not enough to select a cable that can easily withstand the Florida humidity.  When buried, that cable will face a completely different environment.  Account for this when making your selection.
