SO CABLE
HIDE YOUR SO CABLE
Go ahead and hide that SO cable, or leave it exposed for the world to see. It is your choice. As a reliable source of temporary power, cables in the SO family are built to withstand variable conditions without a hitch. In many instances, aesthetics isn’t an immediate concern with temporary power; after all, if a generator is providing electricity during a storm due to an SO cable, it is unlikely that the grateful inhabitants of the home care about a few exposed wires. If you do choose to hide your SO cable, though, consider:
- The strength of the cable. Yes, most SO cables are at least resistant to oil, and very few cables are just SO rated anymore. You’re much more likely to find one that is SOW or SOOW and therefore offers an added protection against water. However, SO cables do still exist. If you need that extra watertight assurance, make sure you purchase an SOW or SOOW cable.
- Foot traffic. Will people trip over your cable? If so, it’s necessary to secure them somehow. Don’t do this at the expense of the cable’s integrity. Instead, always count on purchasing a bit more cable than you actually need. That way, you will have the slack necessary to hide those wires.
- Continual use – If you choose not to use SO cable for temporary applications and instead are installing it in a more permanent situation, go ahead and hide it. Exposed cables wreak havoc with feng shui and can give your home or office an overly-wired look.
