HOW TO INSTALL CABLE
Whether it is of the SO, SOW, coax or fiber optic variety, you have chosen the type of SO Cable that’s right for your application, and are now ready to hook it up. Follow the simple rules below to ensure seamless installation.
- Resist the urge to use every inch. Leave plenty of slack. You should have slightly over-ordered your cable stock to ensure this.
- As you go through the installation process, test each facet of the application before you move on to the next step. That way, you will know the source of a particular challenge if one should arise.
- Are you near something that could emit electrical interference? Stay a safe distance away. A few feet should suffice.
- Understand the needs of the cable. Even the most hardy SO cable variety will wear out quicker underneath the heels of constant foot traffic. If you must install the cable on the floor, cover it with cable protectors. Likewise, understand that if you’re going to power a portable application like an outside stage, you need to take the possibility of inclement weather as a serious consideration before selecting a particular type of cable. SOOW cable, for example, is both oil and water-resistant.
- Don’t put all your faith in tape. To connect two cables, use a cable connector. Tape isn’t foolproof and may lose its stickiness when wet.
There you have it – a foolproof guide to installing cable. Don’t be intimidated by the acronyms; at its core, all cable serves the same purpose and is relatively hardy.
