SO Cable

SO Differences

In the beginning, SO Cable’s durability wowed users.  It was held as the ‘golden standard’ of cables, and the acronym “SO” quickly became synonymous with quality.  Now, it is considered to be the jumping-off point for the improvements of SOW and SOOW cable.  In truth, SO cable is almost obsolete.  It is barely more expensive to use the improved versions.  Although it once was a standard cable, SO is now becoming obsolete.  Here is why.

  • SO cable is not oil or water-resistant.  This becomes an obvious concern when one considers the many ways it is used to provide power.  Keeping the cable dry is a concern that most people do not want to address.
  • SO really is considered a bare-bones wire.  Add a “W” to the name, and this means that the jacket is water resistant.  With the simple addition of an “O,” the jacket and insulation become resistant to water and oil.  This is an obvious advantage at many worksites.
  • The category of SO cable is now used interchangeably to mean SOW and SOOW.  Offshoots like VNTC cable expand the category, which no doubt will become more and more specific as years go by.

Contact Delco Wire & Cable for your SO Cable orders.  Their wire and cable professionals will answer any additional questions you may have regarding SO cable and its offshoots SOW and SOOW.  Delco offers quick shipping and no additional cutting charge.
