SO CABLE

Common Uses

SO cables are virtually everywhere.  You’ll find them connected to generators, steady and strong, ready to deliver should a hurricane cause a power shortage.  As temporary power, they’re a must at outdoor concerts and festivals, flexible enough to easily coil back up and store after the last set.  It’s obvious that common uses for SO cable abound.  What’s not as well-known is the fact that SO cables are very rarely made anymore – and that the acronym “SO” has come to mean both SOW and SOOW cables.

It takes mere pennies to add that “W” to the acronym, and once it’s there, the cable becomes much more valuable.  Water resistance ensures safety and longevity of the product.  When purely SO cables were used as outdoor power sources, a rained-out concert easily meant a kaput cable.  Exposed to the elements, the conductors could be dangerous, posing a spark threat and making use a delicate process.  Who would have thought that one extra letter could make so much of a difference?

We say “goodbye” to the old-fashioned SO cable in favor of its more advanced brothers, and delight in using SOW and SOOW cables that are sturdy, reliable power sources.  Old habits die hard, though; if you simply refer to all SOW and SOOW cables as “SO,” we won’t correct you.  Just keep in mind that the cables you’re really purchasing are a far cry from the original SO – the cable that detests the presence of water.
