SO CABLE

OBSOLETE

Cable manufacturers are working through their remaining inventories of SO cable to make room for multi-purpose hybrids with designations like SOW and SOOW.  Once a mainstay for conducting electricity, SO cable’s popularity is decreasing as new and improved cables become available.  You will not find SO cable providing electricity to homes or businesses; in today’s day and age, it is viewed as the granddaddy of conduits.

Reasons for SO cable’s decline in popularity include:

  • Limited viability.  SO cable conducts electricity just fine – until it comes into contact with oil or water.  It offers little to no protection against the elements.
  • Little or no cost advantage.  Choosing a sparse but functional product is a penny-pinching strategy that will not work where SO cable is concerned.  Due to an increase in production technologies, it is almost as price-conscious to manufacture SOW or SOOW as it is to turn out reams of SO cable.
  • Assembly costs are pretty much the same for SOW, SOOW and SO cable.  As long as the cable contains a multiconductor, adding the jacket and insulation is no taxing feat.
  • As assembly costs for superior products are similar, manufacturers are simply choosing not to make SO cable anymore.

Its more-talented brothers SOW and SOOW are often referred to as “SO cable,” when in fact they offer much more protection than SO.  For all of your SO cable category needs, contact Delco Wire & Cable, where we custom-cut for free.
