SO CABLE
WIRE FUNDAMENTALS
When wiring began, there was SO cable. The product was revered for its ability to conduct electricity; once one of the few powering options available, it is now considered the granddaddy of spin-offs like SOW and SOOW cable. Few people today choose to power their homes or generators with bare-bones SO cable. We are now able to add different upgrades to the acronym economically, ensuring more protection and longevity of the product.
- SO cable offers no resistance to oil or water. In a world without rain or oil slicks, this would not matter, but it is a main concern. The product’s lack of protection against challenging elements reduces its popularity; now that other options are available, SO cable use is becoming obsolete.
- All other wires that begin with the term SO build upon this bare-bones wire. Add a “W” to the acronym, and you have achieved water resistance of the jacket. Go further and insert an extra “O” and both the jacket and insulation resist the intrusion of water and oil.
- Though it is still referred to fondly as SO cable, many cables in use today are in fact SOW and SOOW grade. Other options like VNTC cable continue to expand upon the benefits first displayed by SO cable and improvements in future technology no doubt will add more cable to manufacturing repertoires.
