DIFFERENCES

When it comes to choosing between SOOW wire and SOW, the answer seems like a slam-dunk.  With SOOW wire, you are getting the added protection of oil and water resistance for the jacket and installation, as opposed to just the water-resistance of the SOW version.  The price difference between the two is nominal.  Something extra for almost nothing sounds great, right?

For almost every use, that attitude is correct.  However, in a few instances, SOW wire may actually be superior to SOOW wire.  Consider the following facts about SOW and SOOW before immediately assuming that “more is better.”

• With that added protection for the jacket and insulation, an SOOW wire loses a bit of its flexibility.  SOW wire, on the other hand, is a great choice for temporary power.  It coils and uncoils seamlessly, making it a favorite power source for outside concerts and events.
• Based on the size of the item you intend to power, either SOW or SOOW wire may offer the better choice.  If you are not sure what size cable to use for your application, consult our ampacity chart.  Most SOOW wires are available in SOW sizes and vice versa.
• You can use an SOOW wire for any SOW application.  Powering a generator?  Choose either SOOW or SOW.  With SOOW wire, you will have the added benefit of increased protection.  Conversely, you cannot always substitute SOW for SOOW wire.  More and more people are choosing SOOW because it powers everything SOW cable can – and it is more durable.
