Add just one more “O” to the acronym, and SOW would be there for the long haul.  By “there,” we mean almost anywhere power is needed – indoors for various everyday power needs, outdoors as the cable connecting a famous guitarist’s instrument to his amplifier, and anywhere in-between.

Unlike its big brother SOOW, however, SOW is not UL-approved for permanent installation.  From a technical standpoint, it works perfectly well indoors and out.  Experience a flood or oil spill, though and SOW’s limitations become clear.  Only its jacket is oil and water resistant, leaving the insulation exposed and erosion-prone.

What works well for the guitarist who needs SOW cable for two-hour periods is not the best choice for pre-construction wirework.  A flexible product that is not heavy or cumbersome, SOW is adequate for temporary use and performs well in such situations.  Keeping this in mind, it is not usually considered for uses that demand permanence.

The movement toward SOOW to replace SOW is obvious.  It takes little extra resources to construct SOOW cable.  The extra “O” stands for longevity and an assurance that the product will continue to perform.  Where SOW cable was once the first and only choice, SOOW cable is slowly but surely taking over, offering both a temporary and permanent means of transmitting power.
