Type SOW, SOOW and W Cable: DifferencesMany people ask what the difference is between Type W cable, SOW cable or SOOW cable. While all three items are portable power cords there are some important differences between Type W, SOW and SOOW cable. Type W cable can be either a single conductor cable or multi-conductor. Type W cable ranges in size from 500 MCM down to 8 awg., with maximum conductor counts up to 5. SOW cable as well as SOOW cable is primarily available from 2 awg down to 18 awg in size with conductor counts that can go from 2 conductors all the way up to 60 conductors, depending on the awg size of the SOOW cable you are talking about. Both type W cable and SOW Cable have temperature ranges of -40 degrees to +90 degrees Celsius. Both Type W cable and SOW cable have heavy duty rubber type jackets called EPDM. The EPDM stands for Ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber. While SOW cable and SOOW cable are rated for 600 volt usage, Type W cable is rated for 2000 volt usage.
